Board Information:

History and Functions:

In 1917 legislation was approved which created a state board of electricians. In 1949 the name of the board was changed to the state electrical board. The board is charged with the responsibility to examine applicants and issue licenses to those having the necessary qualifications and knowledge in the laws of electricity and electrical codes. The board has jurisdiction over all electrical installations. The executive director may condemn installations hazardous to life and property and order electric service to be discontinued.

Members/Terms of Office/Vacancies:

The state electrical board consists of five appointed by the governor for a term of five years with their terms of office so arranged that one term and only one term shall expire on June thirtieth of each year. One member of the board shall represent the public and shall not be directly associated with the electrical industry. The board shall include a master electrician who is a contractor, a journeyman electrician, a consumer member of a rural electric cooperative, and a person associated with an investor-owned utility. A member of the board shall qualify by taking the oath of office required of civil officers and shall hold his office until his successor is appointed and qualified. The governor shall fill any vacancy by appointment for the unexpired term of office.
